Shelf life is stated as a range because it is set by the combination of pH and free available chlorine within the bands opposite. Store cool, sealed and out of direct light.
Hypochlorous acid is a strong, non-selective oxidant. Most thickeners are organic polymers and HOCl oxidises them, so the chlorine is consumed by the gel itself long before the product reaches the customer. Transition-metal contamination in natural clays catalyses the same decomposition.
Retained activity in storage, by gelling agent — logarithmic scale
Published bars: laboratory measurements at 70 ppm held to a 20 ppm endpoint under refrigeration (Nagamatsu et al., Dental Materials Journal, 2021). EcoloxTech bar: stated unopened shelf life of the finished gel at 200–600 ppm. Not a controlled head-to-head — the chart shows an order of magnitude.
Free chlorine sits in equilibrium between hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ion, and only the uncharged HOCl passes readily through the bacterial cell wall. The split is set entirely by pH, so two products at an identical ppm can differ by an order of magnitude in effect.

Published comparisons make the point directly: slightly acidic electrolysed water at 0.5 mg/L free chlorine and pH 5.5–5.8 achieved greater than 4.49 log₁₀ reduction of E. coli in one minute, while sodium hypochlorite at the same 0.5 mg/L achieved 1.28 log₁₀ reduction (PeerJ, 2020). Same chlorine dose; the difference is speciation.

Unopened shelf life is 8 to 12 months. The range is not a hedge — it is set by where a given batch sits within the specification, because both pH and free available chlorine govern how quickly the active decays.
Storage
Cool, sealed, out of direct light. Heat and UV both accelerate loss of available chlorine; refrigeration is not required but extends life.
What Sets the Range
Batches at the upper end of the 200–600 ppm band, and any drift outside pH 5.0–6.5, sit toward the shorter end of the window.
Verification
Where a lot is near end of life, confirm rather than assume. Free available chlorine can be checked with a test paper kit or photometer.
Compatibility
Reducing agents, organic soils and many surfactants consume free chlorine on contact. Confirm compatibility before combining with any other formulation.

Regulatory position
EcoloxTech HOCl Hydrogel is intended for cosmetic and other non-EPA/FDA-regulated uses. It may not be labelled, marketed or sold for pesticidal, sterilisation, or medical purposes.
EPA Reg. No. 101112-1 does not cover this product. That registration is held for HOCL-AS200, a liquid disinfectant for hard, non-porous surfaces. It does not extend to a gel, to a different concentration, or to any topical or personal-care use. No antimicrobial, disinfectant or sanitiser claim may be made for the hydrogel on the strength of it.
