Is HOCl Safe? What the Label and the Safety Data Sheet Actually Say

For years, sanitation meant sacrificing safety. But with hypochlorous acid (HOCl), you get both—without compromise.

A note on claims

EcoloxTech generators are regulated by the EPA as devices, are not registered disinfectants, and we make no efficacy claims for them or for the solution they produce. The only EcoloxTech product with disinfection claims is HOCl-AS200 (EPA Reg. No. 101112-1), used according to its label. What applies where is set out on our regulations page and in staying compliant with HOCl. Research referred to describes published studies under their own test conditions and is not a claim for any product.

Bleach Burns. Alcohol Stings. Quats Leave Residue.

For years, sanitation meant sacrificing safety. But with hypochlorous acid (HOCl), you get both—without compromise.

So, Is HOCl Really Safe?

Yes. HOCl is the same molecule your immune system produces to fight infection. It’s one of the only disinfectants that can be:

  • Sprayed directly on skin with no irritation

  • Whether a rinse or drain step is required depends on the applicable rule and the product used; the limits are set out on our regulations page.

  • Misted on pets’ paws, beds, and litter areas

  • Rinsed over produce, meat, and seafood

  • Used around asthma-sensitive individuals

It’s already trusted in wound care, eye solutions, veterinary practices, and even oral rinses—because it’s that safe.

What the Science Says

HOCl is:

  • Non-corrosive

  • Biodegradable

  • pH-neutral to mildly acidic

  • EPA-registered

  • Regulatory status depends on the specific product and how it is used; the limits that apply are set out on our regulations page.

Efficacy claims belong to registered products used according to their labels: EcoloxTech generators are EPA-regulated devices and carry none, and the only EcoloxTech product with disinfection claims is HOCl-AS200, EPA Reg. No. 101112-1.

  • Fungi, mold, spores, and biofilm-forming pathogens

Even at low concentrations (50–200 ppm of free available chlorine), HOCl delivers disinfection.

Safe for Food Contact

HOCl isn’t just safe—it preserves freshness. You can apply it directly to:

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Cutting boards

  • Meat and seafood

  • Packaging, bins, and prep surfaces

, making it the most effective bleach alternative.

Spray HOCl on:

  • Pet paws, toys, beds, and litter areas

  • Eczema-prone or sensitive skin

  • Daycare surfaces, children’s toys, and lunchboxes

No irritation. No scent. No need to wipe.

Where Safety Meets Strength

HOCl is gentle on people—but ruthless on pathogens.

That’s why even Norwegian Cruise Line uses HOCl to eliminate outbreaks and protect guests.

Doesn’t Mean Weak

HOCl is lab-proven to disinfect environments while staying safe for everyday use at home.
