HOCl System Sizing Calculator

Work out how many hypochlorous acid generators a facility needs from three numbers: how much solution you use in a day, the concentration you need it at, and the pH you want it delivered at. The calculator sizes the EcoloxTech E-300 and E-1200 against their published production tables.

ppm free available chlorine (FAC)
E-300 adjusts 5–8 · E-1200 adjusts 4–8
hours/day the facility is drawing solution
refilled outside the draw window
acidified reaches higher ppm at the same flow

What this does not decide for you

  • What the tank actually buys you. It does not reduce how much you generate in a day — you still replace everything you use. It lets the generating happen outside the draw window, so the plant is sized to the 24-hour total rather than the busiest few hours. That is usually where a second unit disappears.
  • Peak draw inside the window. This assumes the tank empties at a steady rate. If most of it goes in twenty minutes, check the tank can deliver at that rate — a pump and pipework question, not a generator one.
  • Solution age. A tank that sits part-full for days is a different proposition from one turned over daily. Storage and turnover belong in the specification conversation.
  • Water and salt input. Feed water hardness and the brine additive both affect real output.

These systems are devices that produce a hypochlorous acid solution on site. No efficacy claim is made for the device or for the solution it produces.

Why sizing an HOCl generator is not a division sum

On-site hypochlorous acid generators do not have a single output figure. The concentration you ask for sets the flow rate. Run an E-1200 at 100 ppm and it delivers 12 litres a minute, or 720 litres an hour. Ask the same machine for 400 ppm and the flow drops to roughly 2.7 litres a minute — about 163 litres an hour. Same machine, a quarter of the throughput.

That is why a sizing question cannot be answered with litres per day alone. The calculator looks your target concentration up on each model’s production curve, interpolating between the tabulated rows, and derives the flow rate from it. Everything else follows from that.

What a buffer tank changes

A buffer tank does not reduce how much solution you generate. Over twenty-four hours you still replace everything you use. What it changes is when you make it.

Without a tank, every litre has to be produced during the hours the facility is drawing. With a tank full at the start of the day, the draw is covered from storage and the generator refills it during the quiet hours. The plant is then sized to the daily total rather than to the busiest few hours — and that is usually where a second unit disappears from the quote.

Three constraints have to hold at once, and the calculator checks all three: the draw window has to be covered, the day’s volume has to be replaced within twenty-four hours, and the tank has to refill in the hours outside the window. That last one is easy to forget and it is the one that turns an attractive answer into an unworkable one.

Where the figures come from

Production rates, concentration ranges, pH ranges and electrical specifications are taken from the E-300 and E-1200 product brochures. Two additive options are modelled, because they behave differently: normal salt water, and acidified brine with hydrochloric acid added, which reaches a higher concentration at the same flow rate.

  • E-300 — 20 to 225 ppm free available chlorine, pH adjustable 5 to 8, ORP 800–1100 mV, single-cell electrolyzer, 316 stainless steel.
  • E-1200 — 10 to 780 ppm free available chlorine, pH adjustable 4 to 8, ORP above 1000 mV, 316 stainless steel.

pH does not change the arithmetic, but it does decide which machine is eligible. Specify pH 4.5 and only the E-1200 can hold it.

What the calculator is for, and what it is not

It is a first-pass sizing tool. It will tell you whether you are looking at one machine or four, which is the question that usually decides whether a project is worth pursuing. It does not replace a specification: peak draw rate, tank delivery, feed water quality, solution turnover and installation all need a conversation.

EcoloxTech systems are devices that produce a hypochlorous acid solution on site. No efficacy claim is made for the device, or for the solution it produces. Where a documented disinfection claim against a named organism is required, it comes from a registered product used according to its label — HOCl-AS200, EPA Reg. No. 101112-1.
